Festival of Indigenous Rugby league kicks off at NCIE

The NCIE courtyard was packed with four teams of footballers for the welcoming ceremony of the NRL Festival of Indigenous Rugby League on Tuesday 6 February.

As part of the festival,  First Nations Gems and Goannas will play the NZ Māori and the Māori Ferns teams at Redfern Oval on Saturday 10 February. The games are the culmination of a week of culture, leadership and inspiration as part of the Festival.

The Muggera Dancers and the Nga Uri O Rahiri Dance Group welcomed the teams, and Mano Tairi from NZ Māori Rugby League spoke passionately of the connection and respect between the two first nations peoples.

The teams will be out and about in community this week– including being back at the NCIE for the Employment and Wellbeing Expo on Friday.

NCIE is proudly hosting the Māori teams who are staying in our accommodation throughout the festival.
