Closure of National Centre for Indigenous Excellence (NCIE) Ltd. Announced
Following an extensive two-year due diligence process, the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation (ILSC) recently announced the divestment of 180 George Street, Redfern to the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC).
As part of that process the two organisations committed to continue working together to transition the operations and ownership of the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence (NCIE), which occupies part of the site, to NSWALC.
While both parties have continued to negotiate a suitable arrangement in good faith over a long period of time, a suitable agreement could not be reached. We therefore now announce the closure of NCIE Ltd.
In a joint statement the ILSC and NSWALC CEO’s have said that ‘Our organisations have worked together in good faith to try and secure the future of NCIE. Unfortunately, we have not been able to reach agreement on terms for ongoing support of the organisation and as a result it will close. We are disappointed by the outcome and will work to support affected staff and community’.
While this announcement comes with regret and sadness, we reflect on the benefits that the NCIE has achieved over the past 16 years. During this time, we have gathered, learnt, and grown as a community through themes such as physical activity, safe and healthy living, and providing space for Indigenous community to gather.
Now 180 George Street Redfern will move onto the next phase of use, but we are extremely heartened to say that this significant property will remain in the hands of the NSW Indigenous community through NSWALC. We look forward to seeing the future plans for the site and how it will continue to bring the community together.
