On 1 August the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation (ILSC) announced its decision to wind up operations of NCIE Ltd. at 180 George St Redfern following the divestment of the site to the NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC).
The ILSC recognises that this news came as a shock to the Redfern community.
In response to the outpouring of support for the future of NCIE, we would like to assure the community that every effort is being made by both the ILSC and NSWALC to ensure that they will still have access to the facility for community purposes and programs under the ownership of NSWALC.
We acknowledge the announcement was particularly distressing for staff. NCIE Ltd. is doing what it can to support staff, including offering separation payments, career transition support and access to counselling services.
All tenants have been advised that their tenancies will continue under the new ownership to ensure that they can continue to run programs for the benefit of the local community.
Through this difficult period NSWALC and the ILSC are working together to try and ensure that community groups retain their current access arrangements with minimal disruption.
The ILSC is confident NSWALC will work to ensure the site remains part of the fabric of the local community, delivering benefits for Aboriginal people into the future.
