From Australia's future sporting stars to the next generation of young leaders. Every year thousands of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders stay at the NCIE to learn, connect and celebrate Indigenous excellence.
Expanding Horizons – Cathy Freeman Foundation
Recently 15 year 5 & 6 students from four remote Indigenous communities,Palm Island and Woorabinda (QLD) and Wurrumiyanga and Galuwin’ku (NT) met for the first time in Sydney for a week-long leadership camp.
Part of the Cathy Freeman Foundation’s Horizon camp it was the first time the group had been in the big smoke. After exploring their lodgings at the NCIE for the week, they were off to see the rest of Sydney.
The aim of the camp is to give young Indigenous leaders educational, cultural and mentoring experiences.
Highlights of the trip included a visit from NRL legend, Ricky Walford at Bondi Beach, exploring Taronga Zoo and a morning spent with Australian Olympians.
NCIE Program Manager and Olympian Hannah Davis shared her Olympic journey with the group. “It’s a once in a life time experience to go and compete in the Olympics. An experience I will treasure forever and I always enjoy the chance to share my journey, and to inspire the next generation of athletes,” Hannah said.
A week of deadly experiences and new friendships for everyone involved.
Sporting excellence - Brothers in Union Camp at the NCIE
The Lloyd McDermott Develop Team was back at the NCIE recently for their Brothers in Union Camp.
Just one of a long list of programs from the Rugby development team named after former Wallaby Lloyd McDermott that opens doors for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to follow in his footsteps through Rugby Union.
The weekend camp was a chance for the mentors to talk to the young participants of the importance of nutrition, on and off the field for good lifestyle choices.
The group took full advantage of the great facilities available at the centre, hosting a number of Rugby matches on the oval and training sessions in the gym.
